3 men charged for human trafficking (Assignment 9)

This is an article that talks about 3 men that were trafficking and forcing women into prostitution. There were four women that were told that they would work in a restaurant in Iloilo City but were brought to a whorehouse in October. They escaped and looked for help in a radio station and they were taken to IJM (Internal Justice Mission).

Assignment 8 (Video)

  • One of the things that got my attention is a banner that had german words on it; the only visible words were BAYERN, IN, and DFUMSCHLAND, which apparently they mean BAVARIA IN DFUMSCHLAND, which they are both locations in Germany.

Assignment 7 Questions for Ch.6-9

Ch. 6

  1. What happened to anyone who did not keep up with the march? They were shot
  2. How did Zalman die? He had a "stomach cramp" and had to stop; his pants were down while he was trampled
  3. What horrible realization did Elie come to concerning Rabbi Eliahou and his son? How did Elie respond to this? Rabbi Eliahou had a piece of bread and his son attacked him because he was also hungry; at the end both were dead. Elie wished for that never to happen to him (kill his dad for a piece of bread)
  4. What was Juliek's last act? Playing the violin
  5. How did Elie help his father when the selection was made? When his father was sent to the left, he ran after him and caused confusion

Ch. 7

  1. How did Elie help his dad when he was on the train? He started slapping him so that he could wake up because they were throwing the dead off the train
  2. Describe the scene Elie witnessed between a father and a son on the train. He gets a "flashback" of the lady that was throwing money to poor people causing them to fight.
  3. How many got out of the wagon? Where had they arrived? Twelve, Buchenwald

Ch. 8

  1. Explain how father/son roles had been reversed in the case of Elie and his father? When his father gets sick, Elie had to take care of his father, and that' s when he starts thinking about how he should be for himself and let him die
  2. Why was Elie's father being beaten? He was no longer able to drag himself outside to relieve himself; they would beat him and take away his bread
  3. What did Elie think of the advice given to him by the head of the block? He thought he was right, but for that second he felt guilty and got his father bread and soup

Ch. 9

  1. What happened on april 5th? The wheel of history turned, they were set free
  2. What was the resistance movement? What did they do? When everyone fought against the Nazis, even if they weren't in the concentration camps
  3. What did the prisoners do when they were freed? They had no thought of revenge, just bread
  4. Who did Elie see in the mirror on the last page of the book? What did that mean? He saw himself as a corpse, he would never forget the moment that he saw himself weak, skinny

Assignment 6

Ch. 4

  1. At first doctor was asking to see if they were in good health and if they said no they would be burned or killed; the dentist would check their mouth for gold teeth to take out for himself or the Nazi group.
  2. Because Beethoven was German
  3. When he gets mad he starts to attack anything that gets in his way
  4. He kept saying that he was sick in order to avoid getting his tooth taken out
  5. A french girl he used to work with in the warehouse
  6. Franek put his father in the marching group and he couldn't do; it ended in beats. After Franek got Ellie to cave in; he had Ellie give him a ration of bread and he had someone yank out his tooth with a rusty spoon.
  7. The Jews are put in a room filled with hot soup. An old man goes toward it and drinks from it and the whole time there was no admiration, just jealousy. When the bombing began the man dies.
  8. "They're expecting trouble." The Germans were afraid that if someone stood up to it all Jews would follow; they knew they would loose that battle so they tried scaring them by showing them what would happen.
  9. They were hanging 2 men and that boy that didn't die right away. The fact that they would kill a boy in front of them was devastating even though seen and gone through many other stuff.

Ch. 5

  1. Because he was asking his father's permission to do so.
  2. He was told to run so fast they wouldn't be able to catch his number.
  3. He asked for them to think of him, to gather 10 men and hold a special service . All of his friends would say kaddish; they didn't do it.
  4. He was gonna get an operation.
  5. It was evacuated because the Russians were coming. It was liberated two days after the evacuation.

Questions ch.2&3 (Assignment 4)

Chapter 2 PG.23-28

  1. The train had stopped in a small town ,Kaschau, in Czechoslovakian. "Our eyes opened. Too late." means that they noticed that they weren't staying in Hungary and it was too late to do anything about it.
  2. She was kind of having a vision about the crematories.
  3. The men bound and gagged her. They struck her so hard that it could have killed her.
  4. The train stopped at Birkenau.

Chapter 3 PG.29-46

  1. An SS officer had told him to lie about his age; he lied about the occupation because he was scared.
  2. He saw the babies out of the truck thrown into flames.
  3. He no longer had faith. The babies and the flame and the questioning of God made him loose his faith.
  4. He felt angered; he started questioning God like why should he thank Him for.
  5. He felt that at Birkenau they treated them more humanly.
  6. They would shower them with hot water.

  8. Because according to the Germans he was being too nice.
