Cattle Car Complex (Assignment #2)

  • Adam Posner was a Jewish lawyer that gets stuck in an elevator. As Posner was stuck in the elevator, he was remembering about the Holocaust. This claustrophobic man was remembering about how the Jewish were put in Cattle Cars (80 in each), and how they were suffering of thirst and suffocation. Adam was also afraid of the dark; the officer asked him to stay there longer, but Posner refused and cursed the man. At the end the Jewish man was saved, still living the horror of the Holocaust.
  • The author writes about things like this to show how Jewish people are still being affected by the Holocaust even though it happened a long time ago.

The Stepfather (Assignment 8)

The stepafather is a heartless thing. He takes the cucumbers from Lakshmi without permission and tells Ama that she has to sell her dowry. The stepfather can't work, and he doesn't make an effort into earning money. Instead, he gambles away the little money they have.

Black Jack
I tell the dealer "HIT ME"
And i watch as he lays the three
With a jack and an eightalready on my plate
I jump and scream 21and the dealer gives me what i won
Ahead i know i should stop
Texas hold 'em here comes the flop
Two aces already showing
My anxiety is quickly growing
And at last i say "all in"
Hoping against hope that i might win
The opponent flips his cards
Pocket aces throw me off my guard
OH NO! I lost a months wages
I go home to face my wifes rages
http://allpoetry.com/poem/3021994

This poem reminds me of Lakshmi's stepfather because in his gambling it's rare that he wins something, but he always ends up loosing. For example, on one of the vignettes it states that her stepfather had won a motorcycle; unfortunately he ends up gambling it away.

Something to read and think about... (Assignment 7)

http://www.aliciapatterson.org/APF2003/Briski/Briski.html
This website really makes you think about the life that they are living. When i saw the brothels, they had some of the things I imagined; broken walls, no floor (tile, ect.), little decoration, and being a dirty place itself. I read that most prostitutes are forced into this because of the lack of ,money they have. Over 7,000 women/girls are included in this dirty business. I also learned that cheap condoms are available, but it is hard to get "costumers" to use them.

Main Problem (Assignment 3) Man vs Man

I think that the main problem of a story is MONEY, but it is Lakshmi's stepfather that causes this problem because of his gambling. They barely have any money, and the dad spends that little that they have gambling. Lakshmi's stepfather does not have one arm, so he doesn't work, which makes it worse because they owe a lot of money and he doesn't do anything to help.

  • "My stepfather's arm... and useless thing." pg. 8
  • "And so he... the old men." pg. 8
  • "My stepfather dozes... his card game" pg. 20
  • "My Stepfather rises... sell your earrings." pg.23
  • "I understand slowly... the tea shop." pg. 24
  • ""This", he says,... "goddess favors gamblers."" pg. 41

Old Man pg.102-104 (Assignment #2)

In this vignette, she notices that something is not right. When she goes upstairs and hears the sound of "grunting", she is curious of what's happening. She is grabbed by the hair towards the old man and the man abuses of her and she tries to defend herself. She feels as if she has been held my ten men, and she cannot breathe. The old man "thrusts" his tonge into her mouth, and as a defense, she bites his tounge. She runs out of the room carrying her clothes into the dark room were she had started.

I picked this vignette because this is the part were she finds out that she is not working as a maid, she is in a brothel working as a prostitute. Turns out it was her gambling stepfather. =(

About Me!! =D (Assignment #1)

Hi my name is Perla I go to Serna in eighth grade; YAY! the last year. My favorite colors are purple and red =) and my favorite sports are basketball and softball. My life is divided by both sports and school;I love both of them. My favorite subject is Math and my weakest subject would probably be reading, but I think I'm getting better at it. I am in the Math Team, and I hope to go San Antonio with them once again. I enjoy getting in UIL events, but this year there have been many things going on so I don't think it's going to happen. I am in Pre- Ap classes, and it's challenging but it's better than being bored all day. Right now I'm in Cross- Country and I'm more than ready to join basketball the next nine weeks.

I have a lazy sister, an annoying brother, a little sister, and two bossy parents; I wonder what they say about me. =) My sister is 15 years old and she is a sophomore in High School; she has been in the same schools as me and teachers tend to confuse us. We are very different, but only some people notice that. My brother is 7 years old; he goes to THE BEST SCHOOL EVER!!! My little sister is only six months old so there isn't really anything to say, other than I love her. My two bossy parents are OVER PROTECTIVE, STRICT, and MEAN, but they say they do this because they LOVE ME. Yea, right!!

Well um that's all i can say about me right now.
